Sam Hobbs (Performer) Sam Hobbs (Performer) was a former university track athlete until he was exposed to dance. Switching his major from Mathematics and Computer Science to the visual and performing arts, Sam began his dance training in both contemporary dance and classical ballet in 2004. He has studied on scholarship at the Long Beach Ballet Summer Intensive, Western Oregon University, the American College Dance Festival, and was a 2005 scholarship recipient to the American Dance Festival in Durham, NC. Sam has performed for three seasons in the role of the Cavalier for the Regional School of Ballet’s Nutcracker, and since 2005 with Rainbow Dance Theatre of Monmouth, OR -- most notably at the World Exposition in Nagoya, Japan. Sam has twice represented Western Oregon University as a performer at the American College Dance Festival in San Francisco and at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. This is his first season with Minh Tran & Company.
Jennifer Hong Berdine (Performer) a Watson Fellow, Jennifer began her modern dance training at Reed College in Portland, Oregon where she graduated with a degree in Chinese Literature. Her studies additionally took her to workshops at the Beijing Dance Academy, the American Dance Festival, and led her to choreograph her own work while at Reed. She independently pursued dance training in Taiwan, Portland and New York where she was on call for the off-Broadway production of Stomp . In Portland, Jennifer has performed in the work of Catherine Egan, Dawn Joella Jackson, Tere Mathern, Carla Mann, Keith V. Goodman / Dance Gatherer and Minh Tran. Most recently she appeared with husband Jesse at 10 Tiny Dances in a work of their own creation. She has worked with Minh Tran since 2002.
Riho Katagiri (Performer) moved to Portland after living in NYC for 8 years where she performed with Teri & Oliver Steele and Mark Drahozal. She first worked with Minh Tran 10 years ago while she was a student at the University of Washington. Her degrees include a BA in Dance, a BA in Interdisciplinary Arts, and a BFA in Photography from UW. Riho also studied patternmaking at the Fashion Institute of Technology and holistic nutrition at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Besides dancing, she worked as a graphic designer before becoming a womens sportswear patternmaker in the apparel industry. This is her first season with Minh Tran & Company.
Carla Mann (Performer) has been choreographing, teaching and performing contemporary dance since 1983. Her choreographic work, based in Portland Oregon, has been presented on the East and West US coasts and in China. Her recent work includes dance video installations and live performance in alternative venues. Carla currently performs with tEEth, and has also performed with Collage Dance Theatre, Dance Gatherer, Os+Co/Dance, JED, The Navigators, Benny Bell & Company, Lynne Phelps, Bonnie Merrill, Touch Monkey, Imago Theater, Ray Terrill and Janet Towner. Carla also serves as Associate Director of Dance at Reed College, where she has taught since 1995. This is Carla's second season with Minh Tran & Company.
Angela Haugejorden (Apprentice) received her training from Youngquist Performing Arts Company, American School of Russian Classical Ballet, and Ballet Arts Minnesota. Professional experience includes Tapestry Folk Arts Dance Company (MN), St. Cloud State University Repertory Dance Company (MN), Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps (KY), University of Oregon, Western Oregon University, and Northern Lights World Winterguard (OR). Angie has studied with Tim Coward, Daryl Thomas, Walter Kennedy, Debra Leigh, JC Caceres, Tracy Wooton, and Joe Sowders. She is a two time recipient of the music scholarship from St. Cloud State University, 2006 recipient of the dance scholarship from Western Oregon University. She received her bachelor of Science in Dance in spring of 2007 from Western Oregon University, while maintaining her role as artistic director for Southridge High School Dance and Guard Programs, along with choreography and training for Signature World Winterguard (CO), Miamisburg High School Winterguard (OH), Murphy High School Winterguard (AL), and Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps. This is her first season with Minh Tran.
